Alpaca & Pima Cotton

Asarti uses the materials of Alpaca wool and Pima cotton for their winter and summer collections.

The Alpaca lives in the Andes region en belongs to the prehistoric South American camelid sort. Due to the extreme living conditions in the Andes mountain range, at 3000 to 5000 meters above sea level, the Alpaca grows a remarkable fleece that is mainly characterised by its softness, brightness and strength. The particularly fine and hole hairs of the Alpaca assure a thermal effect and are lighter and warmer than sheep wool. It is due to these reasons that the Inca elite wore exclusively Alpaca wool and why it has historically earned the name “gold of the Andes”. Baby Alpaca wool is the result of the first shaving of an Alpaca and is known for its extreme softness.

Alpaca wool comes in more than 40 natural colours, from ivory to different tones of grey, brown and black. When dyeing, this rare fibre structure, and especially the lighter tones, adopt colour in an unusual manner that leads to incomparably beautiful results.

Pima cotton grows on the Peruvian coastline, where the earth and climate offer the optimal conditions for the cultivation of this luxurious fibre. With almost double the length of conventional cotton fibres, Pima cotton possesses incredible softness and durability. It has therefore gained the name “the silk of the Andes”. Unlike many commercial cotton types, Pima cotton is picked by hand in a careful and environmentally-friendly manner. The result is cotton of unusual purity that surpasses all expectations of brightness and colour.
